A candlelit stone library with tall bookcases, an arched oak door and a stained-glass window lit by the moon: the first room of a dark academia escape room game
The library: candles along the bookcases, moonlight through the stained-glass window.

A library-house that locked itself

Wrenhallow is a private library-house built on the ruins of an abbey. Aged oak, worn stone, dark iron and tarnished brass. Candles still burn along the bookcases, though nobody has been here for a very long time, and cool moonlight falls through a tall stained-glass window at the end of the hall. Warm light against cold, and deep shadows you can still see into.

It's a grounded mystery. Every mechanism is brass, iron, wood, glass or clockwork that could really exist. If there is any magic, it is only that the house seems to answer to moonlight a little more than it should. Wrenhallow is quiet and watchful, never cruel: it never harms you, and nothing jumps out. If you want a haunted manor escape room for the mood rather than the scares, this is the one.

How it starts

You wake on the floor of the library. You don't know where you are or how you got here. You only know one thing: you have to get out. The oak door is bound in dark iron, with a small brass plate worn smooth by many hands and no keyhole at all. On the reading desk, among scattered papers, a dried-out inkwell and a candle burned almost to the end, lies a note written to whoever wakes here.

Whoever wrote it expected someone. Who locked the door, and why the house woke you, are the questions the season answers, one room at a time.

What playing it feels like

You walk the hall yourself in 3D: down the nave between the pillars, past the long table with its candelabras and stacked books, up to the window. Tap a bookcase, the desk, the tall oak ladder or the dial set into a pillar, and the view moves in close enough to read an engraving. When something in the house moves, the view turns to show you.

There is no guide animal in Wrenhallow. It's you, the candles and the house, with the game's own music underneath. It suits a slow evening and a phone held close.

What kind of puzzles to expect

Wrenhallow asks you to read the house the way its last keeper did. The first room is a short, gentle start, and it teaches the habit the whole game relies on: what you read in one place sets something in another. Each later room adds one new idea and combines it with the ones before. Everything you need is in the room. There is no history quiz, no Latin, no outside knowledge and no long text to wade through.

Stuck? After ten minutes without opening anything, a small Want a hint? button appears. Each tap gives the next, slightly bigger nudge, so you take only as much help as you want.

How long it takes, and what you get

You can look around the room that's open right now for free. To play every room on your own, the whole game is €2.99, paid once.

We expect a season of five rooms to take about one to three hours in all. Want more than one world? All four games together cost €5.99, about half the price of buying them one by one.

Questions about Wrenhallow

Is Wrenhallow scary?

No. It's a dark, candlelit mystery, not a horror game. There are no jump scares, monsters or gore, and the house never harms you. The mood comes from old books, stone, candlelight and moonlight, and from wondering who locked the door and why it woke you.

Can I play Wrenhallow for free?

You can look around the room that's open right now for free, and play along with everyone in the Instagram comments at @daily.escape.manor. Playing all five rooms on your own, at your own pace, plus the hidden room, comes with the game for €2.99, paid once.

Do I need to know history or literature?

No. Wrenhallow looks like an old scholar's library, but every puzzle is solved from what you can see in the room. You never need dates, quotations or outside knowledge. Read carefully, look closely and try things: the house shows you when something gives.

How long does Wrenhallow take?

We expect its five rooms to take about one to three hours in all. The first room is the shortest, a gentle start. Every room is open from the start once you own the game, so you can play one in an evening and come back to the next whenever you like.

What do I need to play?

A phone, tablet or computer with an up-to-date browser. Nothing to install and no account to make. You walk with on-screen sticks or a tap on the floor, or with a mouse and the arrow keys. One access code works on up to 5 of your devices.
