Neon night

The Midnight Game at Neon Heights: a neon escape room online

The Midnight Game at Neon Heights is a neon escape room you play online in 3D, right in your browser. You were only cat-sitting. At midnight every door in the tower locks, and the TV switches itself on. Walk around the rain-lit flat, tap anything, and find the way out.

A rain-lit tower at midnight

Neon Heights is an old apartment tower in a rainy city. Everything glows pink and violet: neon strips along the window sills, string lights, Edison bulbs, the city's towers beyond the glass. It is always night, and every light you see comes from something in the room. The things in the flat are modern, a bit retro and a bit worn: a boxy old TV with two aerials, a record player, a small pink fridge, a sofa in dusty rose check.

If you came looking for a cyberpunk escape room, this is the softer side of neon. There are no chrome corridors and nothing dystopian. It's lofi: rain running down the glass, plants dark against the glow, a cat asleep on the back of the sofa. The tone is playful and a little cheeky, and it is never scary.

How the night starts

A neighbour asked you to look after their cat, Mochi, in flat 1A. You doze off on the sofa. At midnight every door in the tower locks by itself, the lift stops, and the old TV in the corner clicks on: THE MIDNIGHT GAME HAS BEGUN.

The flat's teal front door has a keypad beside it and a cat flap in it, and it won't open. Whoever built this game built it fair: everything you need to get out is somewhere in the flat. Midnight is only the mood. Nothing in the game counts down, and you can take all night.

What playing it feels like

You stand in the flat in 3D and walk around it yourself: on a phone with two on-screen sticks or a tap on the floor, on a computer with the mouse and the arrow keys. Tap anything that catches your eye and the view moves in close: a note on the fridge, the little dials by the cat flap, a sticker glowing on the glass. When a lock gives, the view turns to show you what just opened, so you always know what changed.

Mochi is your company: a round cream cat who naps through most of it and stretches when the flat lets you go. He is never a puzzle himself, just good company on a long night.

What kind of puzzles to expect

The Sunroom, the first room, is a gentle start. It teaches a habit the whole tower relies on: what you notice in one corner of the flat is what you need in another. Each later room adds one new idea and builds on what came before. Nothing needs outside knowledge, trivia or long reading. And in a world that is nearly all pink and blue, no clue rests on colour alone: each one also has a shape, a number or a place.

Stuck? After ten minutes without opening anything, a small Want a hint? button appears. Each tap gives the next, slightly bigger nudge, so you take only as much help as you want.

How long it takes, and what you get

You can look around the room that's open right now for free. To play every room on your own, the whole game is €2.99, paid once.

We expect a season of five rooms to take about one to three hours in all. Want more than one world? All four games together cost €5.99, about half the price of buying them one by one.

Questions about The Midnight Game at Neon Heights

Is The Midnight Game at Neon Heights free?

You can look around the room that's open right now for free, and play along in the Instagram comments at @daily.escape.neon. All five rooms on your own, at your own pace, plus the hidden room, come with the game for €2.99, paid once.

Is it a cyberpunk escape room?

It shares the neon look but not the gloom. Neon Heights is a cosy, lofi take: a rain-lit apartment tower, pink and violet light, plants, a record player and a sleeping cat. The tone is playful and a little cheeky, and nothing in it is there to scare you.

Can I play it on my phone?

Yes. It runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install. On a touch screen you walk with one on-screen stick and look with the other, or switch to tapping the floor to walk there. Tap any object to see it up close.

How long does it take?

We expect the five rooms of Season 1 to take about one to three hours in all, depending on how quickly the clues click for you. Every room is open from the start once you own the game, so you can play one, stop, and come back for the next another day.

Who is Mochi?

Mochi is the round cream cat you're looking after in flat 1A. You never need him to solve anything: he naps on the back of the sofa, keeps you company while you search the flat, and stretches when you find the way out. He is very good at sleeping through midnight games.
